Hi my name is Lara I was diagnosed with stage III serous carcinoma Ovarian Cancer just recently back in November 2013. I found out at a regular check up, which I postponed for three years.
When I went in to see the gynocologist she decided after one check up that she wanted me to come back for a sonagram, cause she had a feeling I had a cyst. Cyst are very common for women to get but sometimes they keep growing. When I went back for my second check up, I remember watching the sonogram tech rolling over my lower abdomen. Sure enough there we're two huge cyst where my ovaries we're one was the size of a grapefruit the other was the size of a baseball. The gyno called for a blood test and called CA-125 to test for my protien levels, if they are off there is something wrong.
I got the phone call on a Friday when I was about to go off to work. I was dressed up with my make-up on ready to go and cut hair, when I took the call that changed my life. I remember her saying this was not the news she wanted to give, however, I tested positive for cancer. All my make-up came rolling down my cheeks and onto my husbands(my rock <3 ) white tee shirt.
She reffered me over to a gynocologist oncologists specialist Doctor Michael Teneriello of Texas Oncology here in Austin. He saved my life he ran a cat scan and confirm they were tumors and recommend a hugh surgery. I asked about fertility but my ovaries we're already compromised cause the tumors we're covering them. We discussed the options of course cause my husband and I had planned for children. We had two plans if it's benign we he will leave me as much as possible for us to still have babies. But if the tumors were malignant then he will remove everything cause ovarian cancer spreads like flower seed it goes every where. He didn't want me to have another surgery the next year if that was the case , so he recommended full removal. My husband I agreed it was my life or death if that was our case. At that point I was not a candidate for feeezing my eggs cause of the loaction of the tumors.
I immediately went to surgery and was under for 6 hours, he ran a bunch of pathology test several times to check to see if it was malignant or beign tumors. He was very cautious cause of my age being so young I was was a rare case.
I woke up to the news that he had to perform a full hysterectomy and appendectomy and a tummy tuck cause it spread to the fat on my belly.
I also had to have a blood transfusion. I went in 123 lbs left the hospital 6 days later 108.
The whole time prior to even going to a doctor I thought I was bloated. I don't know how long this cancer existed or how it came to be.
I am currently undergoing chemotherapy till May of this year. Outlook looks good my doc said I will look back in 5 years and will be fine. I can't have children but God put me here for a reason perhaps to adopt a child in need.
This diagnosis put my life into prospective and only made me stronger. He told me if I haf waited another year it would have been even worse I could have died. So ladies don't wait ovarian cancer is a silent killer.
Thank for allowing me to share. Stay Strong ladies!
